About
The Meaning Behind "NUI"

At the heart of the name NUIdesign is the Japanese word "nui" ( 縫い ), meaning a stitch or to sew. It is a quiet word, but the kanji, one of the three writing systems of Japan, carries a deeper story.
The character 縫 is made up of two parts:
◊ 糸 (ito) meaning thread
◊ 逢 (au) meaning to meet, often used in poetic or emotional contexts, suggesting a meaningful or even fated encounter
Together, they express more than the act of sewing. They hint at the subtle power of connection, where even a thread can bring people and moments together.
This meaning sits at the core of NUIdesign. Each stitch is not only part of making, but part of a gentle connection that may reach someone somewhere, at just the right moment.

A Note from the Maker
Hello, I'm Yokie, the designer and maker behind NUIdesign.
From my small studio in Melbourne, I sew each bag one at a time, hoping it might gently find a place in someone's life. From design to packaging, I work as a solo maker – each bag passes only through my hands.

In a world filled with so many people and so many things, I feel quietly grateful for this encounter, between you and me, and between you and this bag.
Maybe it was a coincidence. Maybe it was meant to be.
Either way, I'm simply happy we crossed paths. I treasure it.
Thank you for finding your way here.
With care,
Yokie
